Discover the beauty of traditional Washi paper.
Washi lanterns embodies the Japanese aesthetic of "wabi-sabi", a concept that finds beauty in imperfection and transience. These lanterns were traditionally used in festivals, religious ceremonies, and even as guiding lights for travelers in ancient times.
Washi paper is one of the most fundamental artistic products of Japan - some of the most popular objects made from washi are paper lanterns. It has the simpleness and warmness connected with natural materials, and it’s environmentally friendly, as well as durable and tough.
The process of crafting a washi lantern is intricate, combining dexterous skill with a keen eye for design. First, a framework, often of bamboo, is constructed. Washi paper is then meticulously applied, often painted or dyed beforehand, turning the framework into a glowing orb of light when illuminated.
