Experience one of the few remaining hidden geisha districts in Japan, with a gourmet meal and performance of music, dance and traditional games
Kyoto is considered the heartland of the geisha world. Geisha, at the most fundamental level, are professional entertainers and are trained in a variety of Japanese traditional arts, such as dancing, singing, flute, shamisen, as well as the art of hospitality. They also play games and engage in conversation with visitors, all in service of providing the most welcoming and intimate environment possible.
Geisha occupy parts of town known as the hanamachi, “flower towns”. Nowadays, there are only five of these places left in Kyoto, and even among these areas only a few hidden establishments offer banquets attended by geisha. In Kyoto, the correct term for geisha is geiko, “women of art”, which suggests longer and more impressive training than their Kanto region counterparts. Geiko have to spend at least five years in training as a maiko (an apprentice geiko) and keep on training throughout their career to maintain the highest level of skills.
