We are delighted to invite you to learn about the traditional Japanese weaving process in Kyoto.
The kimonos of Kyoto are regarded to be amongst Japan’s finest products. The two traditional methods of kimono manufacturing native to the Kyoto area are silk weaving (nishijin-ori) and silk dyeing (kyo-yuzen). The silk weaving method includes dyeing the yarn before it is weaved into patterns and images on the fabrics. When using the silk dyeing method, the images and patterns are dyed on the fabric after it has been produced.
Currently, there are over 500 weavers in Nishijin, Kyoto, but only a few of them have been in business for over 100 years. In this diminishing industry, it can be very difficult to survive in the fierce competition. Some of the oldest traditional kimono weavers in the business are Hattori Textile and Tatsumura Art Textile.
