Enjoy the traditional art of gold leaf painting and create your own art piece.

Kinpaku - gold leaf - has been used in Japan for over a millennium and application can be seen in various forms of traditional arts and crafts, including lacquerware, pottery, painting, and even in architecture, especially in temples and shrines. The golden pavilion, Kinkaku-ji in Kyoto, is one of the most iconic examples of kinpaku's architectural use, where the two upper floors are covered in gold leaf.

Using silver and gold metallics in fabrics is a traditional method to decorate kimonos. Applying them on Kimono, adds a little shine that catches the eye, accentuate patterns, and show class and wealth. There are a few different ways to use metallics on fabrics, such as woven metallics, stenciling, embroidery, and metal leaves.

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

During the experience, you are invited to a small atelier, specializing on Kinpaku - Gold Leaf Appliqué. Witness the process of using metal leaves to decorate kimono fabrics, a piece of silk, or a small object like a coaster depending on your preferred menu. A tissue thin sheet of silver or gold leaf is applied on top of an adhesive, and afterwards the excess material is brushed away. This method is often used when outlining a design detail with the style of painted edging.
